You should check out Pokemon Planet.  It wasn't released by Pokemon themselves, but its a more difficult version of the first 4 generations of the games combined into one.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this, I figured it was worth a share.  It takes longer to level up, gyms are more difficult and select pokemon are very rare (1/18k encounter rates and legendaries are 1/100k during events)

It's reminding me of Pokemmo which I had a stint playing. I'll have to give this a shot at some point.
