Well that and the no disgusting mtx, player approved content, better looking and overall just a superior game.  King
RS3 had player approved content too, for a long time. Player-decided outcome content events..even. Should add many QOL updates came straight from RS3 too..Better looking is low bait also...the graphics are comfy but have never been *that* good.

The definite swift was April 2015, guess it's a combination of lacking content, growing MtX and ironman mode which arguably made more sense on OSRS plus the many updates for OSRS only kicking off later in 2014/2015 is good. I mean OSRS only really kicked off in 2015 with the launch of the GE, Zulrah (QBD rip-off btw),Achievement Diaries (hmm...) and membership bonds on OSRS.

Maybe a little statistical analysis, averages, peak times/months ect might make it a little more useful if you want to in the future?

Wow, those numbers are kind of depressing as an EOC player. The contrarian in me wanted to believe that the OSRS players were just bashing the numbers between the two without having any idea of the real discrepancy, and that EOC had a strong silently majority. I guess i can see why they don’t advertise the numbers online anymore, because I definitely remember them being way higher.

The turning point is no surprise since at that point OSRS received more and more content and RS3 less and less...

I mean, in hindsight to me that makes sense. But I felt that a lot of people were just going to try OSRS for the nostalgia hit and then get bored and leave for other games, or want to try "the main game." It looks like a lot of people really did enjoy the staying power.

I guess I also figured since the goalposts had moved on RS3 to achieving more 200M stats and completionist cape and not so much with 99's, that maybe more people would be playing, and MTX could allow more people who didn't have the free time to buy their way past some of the boredom.

RE: OSRS Players Online - W13 - 09-27-2018

It'd be very interesting to see things like average account age between OSRS vs Rs3. ... so we can answer questions like: are there more new players on OSRS vs Rs3 -- and we can use this data to derive loyalty (player retention) information for each.

RE: OSRS Players Online - W13 - 09-27-2018

Anyways, I updated the page with a screenshot from MisplacedItem's website. I don't think it's necessary to scrape his data (which is very easy btw...) and put it into my thingy... because people won't care about high granularity over large periods of (old) time like that. I think a screenshot showing the whole thing is all the info most people would need.

If it makes you feel any better OSRS has a pretty serious bot problem, Jagex actually publishes botting bans for both games and in most cases its about 5:1 every week. Numbers are at least in part inflated due to bot numbers.

Take this week for example

https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360001275709-18th-24th-June-Player-Support-Stats-

OSRS has double the amount of bots, but also triple the amount of players of RS3...

https://support.runescape.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360000563209-5th-11th-March-Player-Support-Stats

Or this week...

I wouldn't deny there is a bot problem, but you should not downplay the RS3 bot problem. At least in OSRS there aren't any bots with just 99 attack/strength/defense, no other stats and still going strong...

I said "at least in part" not "all player count disparities can be explained in terms of bots". It's incredibly easy to get 99 base in rs3, and 99 base in OSRS isn't really that desirable in terms of gp/hr but OSRS had that HCIM with bot in its name with 200M fm, so they go unnoticed.
