Live Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' - Murdoc - 09-19-2018

Announcement: https://m.uk.ign.com/articles/2018/09/18/new-live-action-avatar-the-last-airbender-series-coming-to-netflix

I really did not care about the movie's "whitewashing", to be perfectly honest, as it had far deeper problems than that - so it's annoying to keep reading about how this time it's going to 'culturally appropriate' and whatnot.

Anyway, any TLA fans out there? What do you think? I personally wish they did a prequel. For example, building on what we saw in the show re Rokku and Sozin. But I feel like the creators just want to undo the movie's mistakes, maybe. Can't blame them - it's their baby after all.

Thank goodness they're finally going to make the first ever live action Avatar:TLA.

The series creators went through painstaking efforts to research various Asian cultures so they can flesh out each nation as unique, thriving, and realistic civilizations. It kinda ruins the worldbuilding if everything about the series screams Chinese and East Asian culture but the actors are all white.

Speaking of world building, I'm excited for this:

Quote:It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone's great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building.
I already know the story of Avatar. I don't want to see the exact same thing over again, as many adaptations like to do. I know the characters, and I love the story, but I would love to see more of the Avatar universe and its lore.

After how awful the movie was, I doubt it will catch on.

They should just make more of the cartoon. Focus on older Avatar's and characters when they were young.

...But hey, if it turns out good then great. May give it a watch, but I really, really, really doubt it.

Even LOK was a bit iffy because the love triangles took away from the story imo.

It didn't bother me when Ben Kingsley portrayed Gandhi, so long as the actors are good it shouldn't matter. You watch a movie for the performances not to tick diversity quota boxes and whatnot.

But meh, we can talk about this in another topic I don't want to ironically derail my own thread.

I'm with Matt, cartoons would've been better. I don't know quite how to explain it - but live action adaptations can never replicate the subtleties. Like Sokka's comedy moments when high on cactus juice. I can only imagine myself wincing watching someone try to act that out.

Has live action of an animated property ever worked? Comic book movies are the closest thing that worked and it took forever to get there.
Honest question here.

And only MCU movies + Batman Begins/The Dark Knight, at that. Comparing the DC Animated Universe with DC films after and including TDK Rises makes me want to weep...
