Assuming you have the slayer level to be assigned them as well as the firemaking level to light the lantern yourself (can't get assistance from others), all you need to do is make sure that it is not just in your inventory, but also EQUIPPED. If it's still not working then, you might want to take a screenshot of your setup near the Karamja swarms.
