I dont follow critics much, last time i did that i found out they were a bunch of nut huggers who liked a very shitty movie. For me to like a movie it comes down to these elements:

Storyline: It must be good, it must be something that really pulls you in.

Acting: nowadays most actors suck balls. They try to hard, or they don't try enough. If you have shit actors, but a good storyline, then you have one sorry could've been movie

Such movies that are good imo: The Good, the bad, and the ugly; Star Wars original series; Planet of the Apes (original), The wailing, Oldboy, V for Vendetta

As of lately, it's hard to find a movie. I'm not big on the marvel series, too cheesy. It's on par with you're typical power rangers shows. The transformers saga, it's ok, if you're all about fight scenes and shit. The New Stars saga, It's been degraded, and is such a tragedy now. I feel like the only good series worth watching, was the X-Men, but that had some faults. It was good though, the storyline heavily outdone the rest.

Some people just like action, So it's very clear that these 1-2 action films do the work for them. I feel like a story resonates with me, and lately, there are no good stories. if i wanted to see action, i'd watch mma or the nfl.

The last part are the actors. Some actors are very terrible, and a terrible actor ruins a good movie. It sucks too, cause some movies could be the greatest ever, but there's a bad apple or two that take a bit away from that. The same goes with music, music is supposed to just be balls out, play with all the emotion you can carry, and you can hear when people just hold back. It's that non-confident attitude that stinks of failure (not trying to be harsh).

TL;DR

Storylines with good acting, not the cheesy 1 liners that stink of asshole

I wonder if there's a service that accurately predicts whether you're likely to enjoy a movie based on your past reviews - combined with cloud info from other users.

So basically if there's a guy out there who liked all the movies that I liked, and hated all the movies that I hated -- and based on the fact that he hated the latest Transformers movie, despite the movie getting high reviews on IMDB, etc., this service would tell me not to watch it.

(Does Netflix's algorithm do this? I don't know).

Yeah, I believe that's exactly what it does, although I don't have Netflix.

I usually just wing it when it comes to media. I'll watch just about anything, just to say ive at least watched it.

Judging a film is beyond me. Seems like most movies out nowadays are atrocious.

I'll look at the genre, actors involved, director/writer, sometimes recommendations from friends/colleagues and if it sounds ok I'll start to watch it. If it's shit I'll turn it off and if it's good I'll watch it.

The fact people can build careers out of convincing others that their opinion of how good a movie is somehow carries more weight than anyone else's baffles. me. Tastes, interests, and so on are SUBJECTIVE. In fact - seeing a film that's been panned by 'the experts' just makes me go out of my way to watch it (The Room, anyone?).

When Gods of Egypt came on TV the other week I shrugged my shoulders and gave it a shot. Turned out that I actually enjoyed the film! Whilst the CGI wasn't great, the story was a bit disjointed, and I found the hero kid annoying - who cares? It killed the time and I'm a big fan of Gerard Butler. I thought his performance as Set was great.

Just make a judgement on the plot and cast. It's not a big deal, really.

“People are continually pointing out to me the wretchedness of white people in order to console me for the wretchedness of blacks. But an itemized account of the American failure does not console me and it should not console anyone else. That hundreds of thousands of white people are living, in effect, no better than the "African Americans" is not a fact to be regarded with complacency. The social and moral bankruptcy suggested by this fact is of the bitterest, most terrifying kind.”

I watch the trailer(s), and if it looks like the most interesting parts of the movie were crammed into the minute or two I tend to skip, also if I can figure out most of the plot by the trailer.
I don't bother with reviews or critics, because I'm not a movie analyst. I find some highly rated movies horrible, and vice versa.
Just like with anything in life I suppose? Trust your first impression and your gut feeling.
Totally not the most inefficient scaper ever to scape..

I'll check the genre, the plot and maybe give the trailer a bit of a watch although I try to avoid trailers nowadays as they tend to show the main parts of the movie which defeats the purpose of going to see it.

Speaking of trailers, I think Thor: Ragnarok is the best one I've ever seen. Totally sold the movie and didn't give away any plot points. And gave rise to the greatest spoof ever:

If it has Samuel L. Jackson in it, it is worth watching.
