Just watched the interesting videos posted by Matchu.

I don't 100% agree with them, but they're 90% right imho. (like the examine thing isn't as big a deal imho as the guy makes it seem. Quests are more than just "bring x to x" and I think that's much more important for RuneScape's success, and the fact that it's classless, playable on slow computers/online - specially in the days of gaming in libraries)

I agree that most MMOs just tried to be WoW killers. It was hilarious how similar they were. Of course, (Old school) RuneScape predates WoW and so it didn't copy WoW until after WoW was already released. It was sad to see but I also saw all the naive players demanding WoW features in RuneScape and Jagex developers deciding to be lazy and take "what works" from WoW.

I think MMOs have a future - but I don't think a WoW-clone is going to be it. It needs to be truly evolutionary and revolutionary. We need a totally new approach but a game that still feels approachable and still can be classified as an MMO. I'm not sure what form that will take. Basically what RuneScape was to the gaming arena in 2001.

I'll never forget how shockingly advanced RuneScape was in 2001 to all other online games of the day. The only other time I had been totally shocked like this was when I played Populous: The Beginning the first time in ~1998.
