Why are you still playing RS? - Murdoc - 09-22-2018

MMORPGs are largely a dying breed. Overtaken by MOBAs such as League of Legends, who are since losing a lot of ground to battle royales like PUBG and Fortnite. The last two have even taken gaming 'mainstream', so to speak. Shaking off the connotations of gamers being neckbeards, 12 year old racists romping the town to find people's mothers, and so on by having sports stars and other celebrities jumping on the bandwagon.

So, why are you still playing RS? Force of habit? Unwilling to give up on accounts you've spent up to 17 years on? Still happily part of communities like x clan or even this one here?

For me I just like the peace and solitude. LoL has made me swear off ever playing team games again unless I'm with friends, and even then they've all become so sick of it they've stopped playing altogether anyway. But when I log onto RS - it's just me. I can do whatever I want and no-one can boss me around otherwise. I'm still struggling to find a better way to unwind than wandering around Gielinor aimlessly, haha. Long may it prosper.

That's sad to hear. Whilst I appreciate the escapism that gaming allows for, I've been there myself playing LoL from 18:00 - 01:00 after work for nearly 11 months straight (as just one example), running from the problem like that is no way for us to live.

No one can sort out their problems overnight, it's all about taking one step at a time and continually building on the little successes. Pace yourself and good things will eventually come through for you.

(OS)RS is a simple game that allows for a nice experience, it is that simple.

What put you off RS3 in the end?

I think RS3 is still fun to play, and the huge amount of quests allow for a fantastic experience. It's just that I reached a point where there is not much left to do outside of grinding achievements or tasks or doing a boss that requires team work. Due to the many options of ''free'' xp in that you gain a lot of xp without actually doing much, getting one or many skills to 99 is a breeze but then you find that there are many ''maxed'' players which have the real ability of a mid-level player. Boss team work is focused on high level gear, stuff like Tier 90 degradable boots / gloves being required just puts people off. The fact that there's promotions and stuff going on all week doesn't really bother me to be honest, but I do acknowledge that in the end the way the game is now perhaps won't be viable for a long time.

I've got goals still, plenty accounts. I still enjoy it so I guess that's the main thing, MOBAs I never really had much of an interest in and I guess grinding out RS is more my style, social aspect to it too I guess, got a bunch of friends that have or still play and its fun just to have that thing in common to talk about, take an interest in and chat about it.

It's all good fun and that's the main thing, if I ever stopped having fun I would have stopped playing, and I have done so. Likewise I have tried other FPS, MOBAS and rs is just more my thing.

I can answer that as well.

RuneScape 3's cash shops really killed it for me.
I also disagree that OSRS is more simple than rs3 with exception to the combat, almost all the skills are AFK in rs3 now I feel like I am playing a clicker style game after a while.

Now to the main question, I think RuneScape is a great pick up and play game, you can do small goals or you can go and spend hours. It also helps that both versions are great Netflix companion games. The more active inputs and attention needed in other MMOs disallow the ability to really follow movies and shows that RuneScape does.

I will say however I would not play RuneScape without the history I had today. Nostalgia is a huge part of why I still play, and in no small part is this community I feel that I can always go back to and feel welcome.

RE: Why are you still playing RS? - Wee Man - 09-22-2018

Oh easy answer for me. I pretty much stopped enjoying the "game" so to speak in 2008. Skilling and PvM is just a chore that I don't wish to take part in at all. The reason I'm still around is clans, specifically multi PvP clans. There's just something about the history, the drama, the beef, the crash wars, the endless hours of shit talking each other on IRC and now Discord, the non stop twitter banter and the salty kids on Reddit that I just find so enjoyable. It's honestly a fantastic community to be a part of but it's not for easily offended/thin skinned types of people.

@duck and Manga: They really should increase max levels to 120 across the board. That would give Jagex so much room to fill with fresh and tailored content, instead of cramping every requirement in the 80s+ or whatever.

Virtual levels accomplish nothing.
